About Vicki Derderian
Originally from the Midwest, I graduated from Oberlin where I studied film and semiotics. Afterwards in my work as a film curator, a magazine editor, and as a teacher I have been drawn to image, symbols, and myth. Now as a fiction writer I use these elements along with lyrical language to explore the doubts and troubles and joys of being alive. My stories are set in the old world and the new, but whatever the landscape my characters are searching for connections and meaning.
My fiction can be found in The Michigan Quarterly Review, The Louisville Review, Solstice Literary Review, Isele Magazine, The Fourth River, and elsewhere.
My awards include a Coppice Prize and a Lit South Award, and my chapbook Not Quite Children, Not Quite Ghosts was a finalist in the WTAW Press Alcove Chapbook competition. I was named a Regional Artist by the Arts and Science Council of Charlotte-Mecklenburg. In addition, I’ve received creative support from the Juniper Writing Institute, Kenyon Writer’s Workshop, Aspen Summer Words, and Writing by Writers, among others.
I live and write in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
